Lovely

That's it. I've had it. Bloody Internet Explorer. Enough.

After a day of configuring the delightfully friendly Firefox, downloading a few add-ons and sorting out imported stuff (about a century's bookmarks and feeds), tonight I have finally started using it normally.

Page loading speed is nothing short of miraculous for a poor sod who's accustomed to the torture of IE7 under Vista ("Ultimate!", already... give me strength). All my widgets and gadgets transferred easily and work fine, and faster, and are better looking. Even using bloody Blogger is more intuitive. Pleasant, almost.

I have been monitoring my machine's performance. The improvement all-round is nothing short of astonishing. Using about 25 per cent less memory and about 20 per cent less CPU. Staggering.

How does Microsoft manage to make such a disaster of a browser? I know, I know...

OK. I admit it. I was wrong. If I were a contortionist, I would kick my own stupid arse. Where have I been all my life?

  1. Mr. P,
I took one look at IE many years ago (it seems) and have never been back. Use F'fox and consider it the b's knees.

  2. And what about the RSS issue?

Since the penny has finally dropped, you may as well get properly tooled up -

For security, you'll need (as a minimum):

NoScript - prevents JavaScript, Java and other plugins from running, and also blocks clickjacking.

And WOT is pretty much a must-have too.

For general usability and productivity, the following are indispensable: Session Manager, Tab Mix Plus, Scrapbook, Adblock Plus and Flashblock.

    That's just for starters.

  3. Welcome to sensible browsing.

However, you might find that some craply written sites don't render properly in Fx. The IE Tab addon will do the trick for you. It just opens an URL in another tab under IE.

Another good one is FEBE to back up all your settings, bookmarks, etc.

For simple RSS feed, Sage-Too can't be beaten.

(btw, you'll need a couple of spare days to wander round Mozilla's site to get your Fx really singing and dancing. Good hunting!)

  6. Oops, just noticed deadbeat Dad recommended NoScript.

Just use it to get rid of these comments :)
