I mean one with a complex story, no pictures, small type, possibly a classic.
I got A Tale of Two Cities for Christmas, an 'Everyman Classic', in my Christmas stocking when I was ten, read it straight through immediately and have never forgotten it.
Our class's Big Read for our first school term in Big (grammar) School was Jane Eyre. Unabridged. Loved that, too.
Who says education has not been dumbed down?
