Every morning, I switch on the radio, tuned to Radio 4's Today programme, and listen for about 15 seconds. Then, the findings being thus far all of a consistent pattern, I turn it off again.
I am waiting, thus far in vain, for a change of tone from the following 'news headlines and 'factual announcements' -- they are not expressions of opinion. Apparently.
'There are fears that the government's policy of X will cause damage to...''The government's plans for Y are causing concern that...''[Name of Labour spokesman] has attacked the government's proposals on ...''The Institute of N has challenged the government's plans to...''The most vulnerable members of society will suffer under the government's plans to P, according to a report from...'
There is the occasional variant:
'The government has announced plans to abolish X,Y and Z. However, the Labour Party has attacked these proposals, saying... '
This experiment is about to reach its conclusion. Findings are expected to replicate those of similar experiments in the past which resulted in the destruction of inanimate objects (to wit., perfectly good wireless sets) by reason of their being hurled against a wall by their owner.

If it's not the radio itself it's the remote control...
ReplyDeleteWho can forget, "If we win the election" delivered by Jim Naughtie to Ed Balls in 2005?
And that stupid Councillor (yes I did spell that correctly) Terry Kelly reckons that Labour has 'no sympathetic media ... or friendly interviewer'.
Still, we do get to listen to the labour people on Radio 4 making right arses of themselves and that, of itself, is entertaining after a fashion. With any luck the Lady Abbott will be elected party leader and we can look forward to seeing her rolling into the studios like a clipper in full sail and airing her knowledge.
I'm afraid I have quite a way to drive (bad boy) to work every morning and I'm in the equally "bad" habit of listening to the Today programme every morning for about an hour. It's become a kind of masochistic necessity.
ReplyDeleteBut recently, after months and months of shouting at the radio in heavy traffic, I'm really looking forward to that wonderful moment when it has become the Yesterday programme. As in kaput, if you see what I mean.
It's utterly pisspoor and getting pisspoorer by the day. Which I think was the general thrust of the original post anyway.
Er, good.
The Government should remove the licence fee from the BBC completely & let them find their own finance.
ReplyDeleteThe BBC is a joke, with Today & Question Time, to name but two, being so obviously left wing biased.
Nigel Farage is on QT tonight - the BBC will, as usual, have carefully selected their "representative unbiased" audience of pro Common Market lefties.
Luckily Nigel is such a good speaker he will not be unduly fazed, but is unlikely to get a chance to speak for more than a few seconds before being interrupted by that twat Dimbleby.
