Do we support diversity in education policy?

The question is put in the Salisbury Review by Oxford postgraduate Vernon Rogers, to which he answers:
'Yes, we support the greatest possible diversity of marks given to students.'
Now there's a thought.

  1. Anon: it means give some students high marks, others low. It means rehabilitate the word 'elitism'. It means educate an elite. Every society needs an educated elite: not all are born with equal competence to understand and learn difficult subjects. We do not want brain surgeons and civil enineers and teachers who have to strain to understand complex concepts about science or society. All cannot win. All should not have prizes. Egalitarianism for its own sake should not dominate education because it is the enemy of education for the brightest and the slowest. The only way to give both an education is to recognise that they are not the same.
