On the left, so to speak, a self-assured patrician smiling loftily at two men he despises: one a chippy fantasist, on the defensive because he knows pretty much everyone knows he's been promoted beyond his competence, and a nerd who, having bumbled into the wrong room, forgets everything his minders told him about standing up properly when someone important is talking to him.
